JANUARY OUTREACH & EVANGELISM FOCUS
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY DENVER Our January benevolence is dedicated to Habitat for Humanity. Cross of Glory has been assisting Habitat for many years, in many ways. A number of our members have volunteered by building homes, volunteering at the stores and by contributing to Habitat monetarily. As most of us have not been able to continue to help build, our church is making a financial contribution to support this program that helps so many in Denver to live comfortably in their own homes. Thank you for helping Habitat of Humanity Denver any way you can! ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** *****
Well as we often said in Chicago, “There’s always next year.” Bronco fans, hang in there for the 2023 season! Last year, Pastor Mike set a goal in February to collect 10,000 cans of soup for Metro Caring for the Souper Bowl. We tried, but we did not meet that goal. We were short by (a lot!)…. So this year we will try again by collecting and donating cans of soup for 2 months, January AND February. We can do it! Start filling our Big Orange Box (BOB) with all the cans of soup you ‘can.’ I hope the New Year brings you peace and joy. I’ve enjoyed being Outreach and Evangelism Chair for the last two years. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Jan Reich |

President’s Thoughts for November
Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
Romans 12:13
Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you,in order to bring praise to God.
Romans 15:7
Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.
Hebrews 13:2
During our January 2023 Congregational Meeting, there will be an agenda item that we will vote on, and I am describing it in this President’s monthly article. I know Cross of Glory is known as the church that welcomes anyone who walks through their doors. The following will open up our church to more people who need our love and introduce them to the Lord’s love. The program is called Reconciling in Christ (RIC) and is found on our ELCA Synod website.
The purpose of the Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Program is to ensure the welcome, inclusion, celebration, and advocacy for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions; work for racial equity and commit to anti-racist work and support the national program.
Since 1983 the RIC program has been a public way for faith communities to see, name, celebrate, and advocate for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions in the Lutheran church.
To be recognized as a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Partner, your faith community will:
- Explicitly state a welcome to people of “all sexual orientations, gender identities, and Seekequity” or “anti-racism” in its welcome statement.
- Be open to calling an LGBTQIA+ and Black, Brown, Indigenous, Person of Color (BIPOC) Rostered Leader.
- Allow community space/sanctuary to be used for LGBTQIA+ weddings and blessings.
- Make a meaningful contribution annually to support the national RIC program.”
Coming from Broadmeadow United Methodist Church, here is a sample of what we can put on our website:
Believing that the Holy Scriptures and the example of our Lord Jesus Christ direct us to embrace all people, Cross of Glory Lutheran Church proclaims with joy that Everyone is a beloved Child of God and is welcome to full participation in all aspects of church life. We celebrate the diversity of humankind, where people of any gender identity, sexual orientation, age, economic status, faith history, marital status, race, ethnicity, or mental/physical ability are created in the image of God and worthy of God’s love and grace. We especially reach out in love to those who have experienced pain, exclusion, or discrimination from the church or society.
We would then have the Reconciling Ministries Network logo underneath.
Please call me (303-907-8410) or email me at lugopspe@gmail.com with any comments, concerns, etc. You can also call the anyone on council or Pastor Mike with your questions. We are all here to listen to you.
Pam Lugo, President
STEWARDSHIP
Be on the lookout for the 2023 Time and Talent Sheets and Financial Pledge Cards being mailed or placed in your mailbox in the narthex.
We are so fortunate! Regardless of the “things” we have, we are privileged to live in the greatest nation on earth! In but a few days, we will be able to vote and choose our laws and governing representatives, a privilege many on the planet do not have!
During this month of Thanksgiving, churches everywhere encourage their members and friends to prayerfully consider what Time, Talents and Treasures they will share in their respective churches for the upcoming year. We also at Cross of Glory hold our Annual Stewardship Drive in November, and we pray, that all members of our congregation, return Time, Talent and Financial Pledge Cards to our, your, church by our First Sunday of Advent, November 27.
Too often, we assume others in the congregation will do the many tasks necessary to keep Cross of Glory vibrant and impactful. Sometimes we underestimate our abilities to give and consequently, depend on others to BE the church. May it not be so at our, your church! Especially given our few numbers and unique challenges, we need ALL members to be involved… and this cheerfully and sacrificially. Shelly Blakely, our Stewardship Chairperson, invites you to take to heart the Time and Talent sheet that you will soon be receiving (either at Cross of Glory or via the mail). You also will be receiving a Financial Pledge Card. As you consider what you are willing to share at Cross of Glory in 2023, please do not assume someone else will do what we have the opportunity to do. As we are getting older, with few kids and younger families in our congregation, the time is especially upon us to step up and to do more than we have done in the past.
Please be sure to do what you can to minister at our church and consider what additional ways you may be able to share Jesus with others. BE an active part of our congregation. Be looking for Shelly’s letter soon. Please receive it with openness and a willingness to all the more BE involved. Pray! Pray! Pray! Thank you!
Metro Caring’s November Items of the Month: PACKAGED DRY GOODS
Harvest comes not every day. The seasons come and go. And chilly north winds blow. Thanksgiving comes again! Behind the life of man. That half the landscape fills. That runs across a continent. The oats, the barley, and the buckwheat shine. That beamed in a Heraldic shield. Anonymous
As you plan on preparing that big pot of chili, please pick up an extra bag of beans for Metro Caring this month. They can use some rice, sugar, and flour too! Thank you for all you share.
Jan Reich, Outreach & Evangelism Chairperson
NOVEMBER OUTREACH & EVANGELISM FOCUS DENVER RESCUE MISSION FREEDOM SERVICE DOGS
The month of November is filled with so much! We vote, we honor, we remember, we share, we thank, and we change our clocks…
Cross of Glory will do something a little different this month. We are splitting our monthly benevolence to assist two organizations. Half will go to the Denver Rescue Mission, an organization we have supported throughout the years. Denver Rescue Mission feeds Thanksgiving dinners to thousands of our fellow citizens every year. If you would like to add to their cause, please designate on your check for Denver Rescue Mission.
The other organization we are donating to is Freedom Service Dogs of America. A local branch in Englewood, partners people with custom-trained assistant dogs. Clients include veterans with PTSD, and individuals with neurocognitive disabilities, physical challenges such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, MS, spinal and brain injuries.
FSD provides therapy dogs to serve with therapists, law enforcement, and more. Since 1987, Freedom Service Dogs of America has provided support to 200 active teams, at no cost to their clients.
Their mission is to transform lives by partnering people with custom trained assistant dogs. If you love working with dogs and want some fun, they offer a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. Visit the website at: www.freedomservicedogs.org
OCTOBER OUTREACH & EVANGELISM FOCUS: FOOD BANK OF THE ROCKIES
So many verses and parables teach us how we should be living our days. The Gospel for the last Sunday in September was from Luke 16:19-31. Jesus told a story of a poor man named Lazarus who longed, yes, longed, to satisfy his hunger.
I wonder what it felt like to lay on the ground, his body covered in sores, nothing to eat, day after day? I hope and pray no one in our Cross of Glory family ever experiences a single day like that! Yes, our Lord took care of Lazarus after he died, but the rich man in the story did not care for Lazarus while he was alive.
Our focus for October will be the Food Bank of the Rockies… our designated $500 monthly benevolence to give food to the poor.
If you are available to volunteer at the Food Bank, please visit their website at foodbankrockies.org.
Click on “Volunteer” and go through the sign up. They can really use the help with holidays coming
Metro Caring’s October Items of the Month: Personal Hygiene Items & Diapers
We collected a number of personal hygiene items in August and the good folks at Metro Caring were thrilled to get them. They have requested we do this again this month, as the need is still there.
Please offer soaps, shampoos, toothpaste and toothbrushes, as well as diapers (all sizes), for our Big Orange Box, BOB, at the front of the church.
Of course, canned food items are also welcomed! Bring those to BOB as well. Remember Lazarus.
Thank you to Lindsey Janoe and Angel Torres for their artistic talents! They painted BOB and ‘he’ is Orange once again.

PRESIDENT’S LETTER FOR OCTOBER
Pray to the Father. He loves to help. You’ll get his help and won’t be condescended to when you ask for it. Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought.
James 1:5-6
As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile – the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him.
Romans 10:11-12
I love Autumn with the change to cooler temperatures and the change in the leaf colors. It makes me feel energized like anything is possible and full of hope. I am praying for our congregation with the belief that the Lord wants us to continue ministry in this place. We need every one of you to help in whatever way you can. Our church is open to everyone as the Scripture says, “to the Lord there is no difference between Jew and Gentile – the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him.” Anyone who comes through our door is welcome.
Remember to check on those we do not see in church. Give them a call, send them a card or write them a quick email. Let them know they are still a part of our congregation, and they are not forgotten.
Also remember to join us for Bible study on Zoom on Tuesday nights as we study the book of Isaiah with Steve Wilson. Join us on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM as Pastor Mike leads us in a study of The Lord’s Prayer. We are so lucky to have the opportunity to study the Bible.
See you in church or on Zoom.

SEPTEMBER OUTREACH & EVANGELISM FOCUS: SALVATION ARMY
For the month of September, Cross of Glory will designate The Salvation Army for our benevolence. With so many disasters, natural and manmade currently occurring in the world of late, the role of the Salvation Army is so desperately needed.
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
They are in 130 countries. Salvation Army provides services from meals to disaster relief, homeless shelters to summer camps. 23 million Americans benefit each year. If you would like more information, their website is salvationarmyusa.org.
Metro Caring’s September Items of the Month: Pasta and Spaghetti
BOB is hungry for Italian this month. Please fill the Big Orange Box with pastas and spaghettis. Please offer sauces in cans, not glass jars. The canned sauces work so much easier for the folks at Metro Caring. They really appreciate how your kindness helps them fulfill their mission. Thank you!
SEPTEMBER PRESIDENT’S LETTER
I need this verse more and more these days. I get so caught up with situations that are going on and I want the situation to be solved right now so I can have peace again. My heart knows that my true peace can only come from God, and I know if I leave my problems at His feet He will take care of them in His own way. What a comfort that knowledge is to me.
Fall is right around the corner, and we will have our Rally Sunday on September 18th. It is a time of renewal, time to come to church again, time to attend Bible Study, time to engage with your fellow members of Cross of Glory. Watch for the activities you can get involved in by reading your newsletter.
If you have any great ideas you want to share on how we can get more involved with our community, our members or how to draw more people into our wonderful church, let your council members know.
We are here to listen, and we can’t do anything without you. We want to welcome all people to our church so they can experience God’s love.

AUGUST OUTREACH & EVANGELISM FOCUS
HELPING HANDS
The ‘dog days’ of August are upon us! For some, summer vacation is over as children and teachers return to school. For others, the month of August is one hot day after another.
For August, we have our own Helping Hands ministry for those among us who have special needs. This program is a great way to assist those in our Cross of Glory family. If you could provide help or you know of a member who could use a helping hand with something, whether it be financial, help around their house or a ride to the doctor, please let Pastor Mike know.
Metro Caring’s August Item of the Month: DIAPERS & PERSONAL HYGIENE ITEMS
The folks at Metro Caring are noting a need for diapers (any size), and personal hygiene items this month. The good news is most municipalities have taken diapers off the sales taxable list! Personal hygiene items needed include toothpaste, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, soap, shampoo, sunscreen, and Kleenex. Anything you use, the patrons at Metro Caring use too! BOB (our Big Orange Box) at the front entrance at Cross of Glory wants you to fill him up.
President’s Thoughts for August
Well, I hope you have joined us for a few get togethers so far this summer. We have had a Summer Picnic, Movie Nights, Game Nights plus Tuesday Night Bible Studies. There are still a few more opportunities to join us in August. Make sure you read this newsletter for those opportunities. We enjoy seeing you in person and we hope to see more of you in the future. Another opportunity for us to welcome people into our wonderful congregation is through… Ministry of Reconciliation.
What is reconciling in Christ?
What does the Bible say about the Ministry of Reconciliation?
Second Corinthians 5:18-19 declares, “All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ.”
Here is an example of what’s on a church’s website that is involved in Reconciled in Christ Ministry:
Traditional Worship, Progressive Attitude, Radical Hospitality
Believing that the Holy Scriptures and the example of our Lord Jesus Christ direct us to embrace all people, ???????? Church proclaims with joy that everyone is a beloved Child of God and is welcome to full participation in all aspects of church life.
JULY OUTREACH FOCUS
HAN HEE KIM WORLD MISSION CENTER CHILDREN OF JESUS MINISTRY
Our wonderful neighbors next door, the Korean Baptist Church, matched Cross of Glory with a youth in Peru a few years ago. We sponsor Fasavi Chota, Jefferson Javier, now 15 years old. Jefferson wants to be a policeman. His prayer request is for his family to be saved and live in a better situation.
Prior to the pandemic, a group of volunteers from the Korean Baptist Church would travel to Peru on a mission trip. Cross of Glory has kept this mission in our benevolence over the years. Please be generous with your financial help to this mission.
Metro Caring’s July Item of the Month: CANS OF VEGETABLES
This month, we will be collecting cans of vegetables. Metro Caring doesn’t accept fresh vegetables. Please bring as many cans as you are able. If you can give me a call, my phone number is 303-378-2178, to let me know BOB has food, I’d appreciate it.
President’s Thoughts for July
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8
In Bible study on Tuesday nights, we have started studying the book of Acts. It is considered the beginning of the church where the apostles spread the gospel message of salvation from Jerusalem to Rome and beyond. Luke relates how unity and love prevail in the church and how God protects the missionaries from their enemies. I am hoping as we study this book each week, I will understand how the Holy Spirit is still strong in the church and in my life. After Pentecost there was joy among the followers, I would like to feel that joy and excitement here at Cross of Glory.
Pastor mentioned in his message in the June newsletter, “We need more people, more families, more kids, to sustain our church and ministry into these next decades.” We need your enthusiasm and ideas. Let the Holy Spirit guide you in prayer and you may be led to a great idea we could use to further the ministry.
Highlands Lutheran church is a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) church. It means the church welcomes people of all sexual orientation, gender identities and gender expressions as well as Black, Brown, Indigenous, People of Color, etc. These people are experiencing exclusions even among churches who declare “All are welcome”. We say all are welcome at Cross of Glory, but could we let these group of people know they are welcome by saying so on our website with special wording and logos that let them know we are a safe church for them to come and share Christ with us?
Let us explore this together as a congregation. If you want to explore this topic, I received these links from Pam McClune: Rocky Mountain Synod site www.rmselca.org/reconciling-christ or the Reconciling in Christ site www.reconcilingworks.org/ric
If you have any questions or just want to talk, I would be happy to do this with you.

President’s Thoughts for June
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And he shall direct your paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust the Father
While I am writing this newsletter piece, I am looking out the window at sunshine and snow. It is Spring in Colorado, and it is beautiful. I chose the Proverb verse above for my newsletter piece this month as we are studying Proverbs in Bible Study on Tuesday night. I was reading my devotional on these verses and the main point is to trust in the Lord with all our heart. We must wholly rely upon God’s promises, wisdom, power, and love to help us in every circumstance. I know myself as a human being, I am imperfect, and I know I need to trust that the Lord will grant me grace and forgiveness when I reach out to Him. I will do my best to follow Proverbs 3:5-6, but I also know God loves me and will be with me in all things.
We know God loves us and loves Cross of Glory. We shall go forward with faith and trust the Lord will guide us and everyone at Cross of Glory.
Pam Lugo
STEWARDSHIP
I am so grateful we all have different spiritual gifts. I think that makes us so much stronger as a community. There are some things I am good at doing, but so many others that are just a little beyond my abilities. Knowing those bases are covered is a great relief. Some of us are movers and shakers, some of us organizers and fund raisers, some extroverts and some introverts, some mystics, and visionaries, some who also serve when they only stand and wait. Our diversity is our secret. As unassuming as we may seem in a world that values power, our strength is mighty because it arises from a great many bodies; all with the same big heart.
Also, if you still want to do submit your Time and Talent sheet to share your talents, please let me know so I can get you on the list for helping out the committee of your choice.
Upcoming events are coming in the Spring with the first event,
Community Shred a Thon
Saturday, May 14, 10:00 to 12:00 Noon.
Thank you.
Stewardship Chairperson
Shelly Blakely
LENTEN OFFERINGS: PROJECT ANGEL HEART
This year, Cross of Glory will dedicate our Lenten Offerings to the Project Angel Heart organization. Project Angel Heart works to improve the health of people with life-threatening illnesses. Meals are prepared and delivered that are purposely tailored for thousands of Coloradans. PAH has been especially essential during the Covid pandemic.
Please be generous with your offerings during Lent. If you would like to volunteer, please check out their website: ProjectAngelHeart.org
There are a number of jobs you can do for this wonderful organization.
MARCH OUTREACH FOCUS HELPING HANDS
As we get ready for the Lenten Season, it is a good time to reflect. It’s a complicated time of the church year. How thankful we should be for what Jesus gave up for us! His Life! And Him knowing the time was approaching for His suffering. It was a time of great anguish for Him. And then on Easter morning, we celebrate with great joy, His resurrection.
From one extreme to another, up and down and up again. Sometimes, our own lives are like that, the ups and the downs. Cross of Glory has helped many of our members throughout the years with Helping Hands. If you or someone you know in our congregation is having a troubled time, please connect with Pastor Mike. Let him know if help is needed. Our monthly benevolence for March is there for YOU!
Metro Caring’s March Food Item of the Month: CANNED MEATS, CHICKEN, TUNA, SPAM
During March, please bring canned meats to BOB, our Big Orange Box out front. The folks at Metro Caring are so appreciative of our donations. Thank you all!
As we are still in the winter months, I ask those of you entering the church during the week to please check BOB when you come in. If you would please bring any food items in to prevent freezing. There are boxes on the floor under the mailboxes, let’s fill them up. Give me a call to let me know we have food ready to go to Metro Caring. Thank you!
A special Thank You to all for bringing soup to church through the month of February. Pastor Mike set a hefty goal at 10,000 cans. At this writing, we’re still collecting soup, I’m not sure we’ll hit 10,000, but we have made an impact. Thank you again! I’ll have a final count by the end of February.
LENTEN SCHEDULE
Lent is upon us! This Wednesday, March 2nd, our friends at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2400 South Colorado Boulevard, have invited us to attend in-person worship with them in their church building. Be looking for the link so that those of you choosing not to attend in person might be able to be part of the worship experience as well.
And then, the following five Wednesdays, we will be gathering at Cross of Glory for 7:00 PM worship. Using Holden Evening Prayer as our format, we will be presenting character sketches of certain ones who encountered Jesus in His ministry and trek to the cross. AND, our Zoom link will be available for those choosing not to attend in person.
Wednesday, March 9: The Woman at the Well
Wednesday, March 16: Peter
Wednesday, March 23: Mary Magdalene
Wednesday, March 30: The Apostle Paul
Wednesday, April 6: Mary, The Mother of Jesus
We are still in need of people who will volunteer to read Scripture passages. Please be sure to visit with Mary Lemke, our Music and Worship chairperson or Pastor Mike about your willingness to help. We also are looking for those who might play an instrument or sing a solo for us during Lent.
Pastor Mike and Pastor Todd from Prince of Peace are still talking about Holy Week, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday Services. So much depends on the virus. As plans unfold, we will be sure to let you know. Of course, we will be Zooming services for those who choose to remain at home during Lent.
Be sure to be with us for Wednesday observances and Sunday morning worship throughout these next 40 days of Lent.
President’s Letter March 2022
2 Thessalonians 3:5
May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance
I love this verse because I want the Lord to direct my heart into God’s love. This newsletter is for March, but I am writing this article in February just past Valentine’s Day which, of course, reminds us love is in the air. I was in the sanctuary this morning as I had to pick up something in the church. When I walked into the sanctuary the first thing I noticed was the banner up at the altar with the hearts and the word love on the banner.
Our Education council member Steve Wilson is always reminding us of the love Christ has for us. For me, the love of Christ leads me to Peace which I need to function each day. We can experience the Lord’s peace continually and in every way. Peace must be practical and practiced. The best way is to begin each day reading God’s Word and praying for His guidance during the day. When things build up during the day, you can think back on your morning devotion to return to that peace you started your day with, in His Word. I will end this short article with this verse from 2 Thessalonians 3:16. Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.

Metro Caring’s December Food Items of the Month: POTLUCK FOOD ITEMS
Potluck dinners, are such fun and always great food. We Lutherans sure know how to eat well! But COVID-19 …We had to stop enjoying those great meals and happy chatter. Did we still shop for all the ingredients for those casseroles, just in case? Are there items in your cupboard that you won’t be using soon?
For December, we will be collecting all those ‘potluck’ items for BOB, our Big Orange Box. BOB has plenty of room for all those canned, packaged, bottled food items you have at home. Bring them to church for Metro Caring Food Bank.
The folks at Metro Caring are also in need of BABY DIAPERS, any size if you find yourself in the baby aisle at the store.
A very Merry Christmas to you, dear people at Cross of Glory!
Thank you for your gifts,
Jan Reich, Outreach Chairperson
DECEMBER OUTREACH FOCUS: CROSS OF GLORY’S HELPING HANDS PROGRAM:
Our congregation reaches out in love to the community, the country and the world. Throughout the year, we reach out to those who have a need. Several years ago, growing out of those needs, Cross of Glory created a Helping Hands Ministry.
Ah, December! The last month of the calendar year, the first month of the church year. Especially during this month, let us start out the new year with those closest to us, our church family. Let’s “Reach Out” to our members, embracing those amongst us who have special needs. Whether it be bringing a meal, driving them to a doctor’s visit, shoveling their sidewalk, or just sitting and enjoying a cup of tea, please add our church members’ needs to your list of things to do. Also, thinking of all those extra things that need to be done – decorating, shopping, cooking and baking, Christmas cards, and so much more! Is there something, someone we forgot? How about helping others?
If you or someone you know needs Helping Hands support, please contact Pastor Mike. All requests are confidential. Also, consider supporting the Helping Hands program with your time or service. If you can help, please let Pastor Mike know of your availability.
DECEMBER 2021: FROM YOUR PRESIDENT:
A circle of light surrounds all who seek the protection of the Spirit. None are turned away. None are forgotten. For the love of the Spirit is wide and generous, its reach encompasses the whole world. It can overcome any challenge, meet any need, and heal any hurt. As you make your way through this day, come what may, remember that circle of light. Feel its presence in your life and know that you are safe in the shelter of the Spirit’s care. Be at peace in your heart. There is strength beside you that will never fail, a blessing that will abide with you forever.
TAKE CARE, BE SAFE, and BE BLESSED.
Danny Danforth
NOVEMBER OUTREACH FOCUS: DENVER RESCUE MISSION
Fall is in the air, we prepare for colder weather, the aromas of delicious foods in the oven, friends and family time together, thankful for our homes, health, and loved ones. I sure wish this were true for everyone. We know it isn’t happening everywhere, for all. As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, we are reminded of those around us who are in need of good food, a warm bed, a job, companionship. Denver Rescue Mission has been providing these and more to families and individuals hit with hard times. This month of thankfulness will be dedicated to assisting Denver Rescue Mission. Please consider a contribution to this very worthwhile organization assisting those in need in Denver for years.
Luke 6:20-21 Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said: “Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.” Jan Reich, Outreach

STEWARDSHIP
Wow we did it…
I want to thank everyone once again for all your help, from donating items to our Yard Sale, taking the leftovers to ARC and everything in-between. We could not have done this without you and your help for sure. The Shred-it event was great as well. These two events raised money for our little church. The Shred-it event helped our community dispose their important papers in a safe place. Our Yard Sale helped the over-stuffed, help the under-stuffed find treasures! So, with all that said, “Thanks to all for a job well done.”
Now as we head into Fall and curl up for the Winter, please think of what you can do to help at Church, like praying for people and greeting new guests at our front doors. Oh, and don’t forget to sign up to help next year for the Yard Sale and Shred-it Events!
Be watching for information about our annual November Stewardship Drive that will provide your 2022 Time and Talent Sheets and Financial Pledge Cards coming to your mailboxes. Please return your T&T Sheet to me and your sealed Financial Pledge Card to Pam Lugo, our Financial Secretary. It would be most helpful if those are returned no later than November 21. Thank you for sharing your tithing, treasures and talents.
I am so happy to be a part of such a wonderful Family called Cross of Glory.

FROM YOUR PRESIDENT…
A few words from your President Danny Danforth
I would like to honor all of the mentors in our community, which actually means I would like to honor all of us. We have all been blessed by mentors through our lives, women and men who have seemed to be at the right place at the right time, who showed an interest in us, who both challenged and supported our own efforts. May the Spirit bless them, one and all. And at the same spiritual time, each one of us has been a mentor to others, sometimes without even realizing it. We have been an example. We have said the right thing at the right moment. We have helped to show the way forward. May the Spirit bless each of us into becoming the best mentor we can be for the sake of the world in which we all live. TAKE CARE, BE SAFE and BE A MENTOR TO SOMEONE.
Danny Danforth
FROM YOUR VICE PRESIDENT…
Thank you so much for all of the prayers, cards, telephone calls, visits, and thoughts for when I had my knee surgery. It is very much appreciated and to be loved by this congregation. My knee is healing well and I’m very grateful for all of the wonderful nurses and doctors and staff and physical therapists that work with people like me to make me walk again.

COOK PARK NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
Cross of Glory was privileged to be in the Cook Park neighborhood. For years, many of our neighbors have regarded Cross of Glory as their church whether they frequent our worship services, attend community-user groups housed in our church or stop by our church building for any number of ministry activities throughout the year. Cross of Glory IS their church. On Tuesday, August 3, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, held at not-so-far-away from our church, Cook Park, The East Evans Business Association sponsored a “Get-to-Know Your Neighbors and Emergency Responders” community event, called National Night Out. This was the 37th year for this event that happens all across our Nation on the 1st Tuesday in August. Our church will have representatives present in a booth sharing information with our neighbors about Cross of Glory ministry and hand out water bottles.
Thank you, Nancy Barlow, Scott and Kelli Dankenbring, Helen Devantery and Julie Prange for donating your time at the booth and/or providing items to be distributed.
Jan Reich, Outreach and Evangelism Chairperson: AUGUST EVANGELISM FOCUS
For the 4th of July, Pastor Mike included a quote from Great Britain’s former Prime Minister, Tony Blair. When asked about the greatness of our country, he said, “Well, if you doubt it, ask yourself why so many in the world want to go there.”
Well, let’s think about God’s greatness and why so many people in the world worship Him and want to go to church? Our focus this month is to bring our neighbors, friends, and strangers to church with us. What do you think? Are there ideas you have to grow our wonderful church? Please share them with me.
Metro Caring’s: August Food Item of the Month COOKING OIL AND BABY DIAPERS
Thank you to all who bring items to BOB, our Big Orange Box, located at the front door of Cross of Glory. This month, please help to fill BOB with the much-needed items of the month: Cooking Oil and Baby Diapers. All sizes will be accepted. Thank you for your generosity.
AUGUST OUTREACH FOCUS: HELPING HANDS MINISTRY
Our congregation reaches out in love to the community, the country, the world. Throughout the year, we reach out to those who have a need. Several years ago, growing out of those needs, Cross of Glory created a Helping Hands Ministry. During August, our Outreach will be dedicated to our church family.
If you or someone you know needs Helping Hands support, please contact Pastor Mike. All requests are confidential. Also consider supporting the Helping Hands program with your time or service. If you can help, please let Pastor Mike know of your availability.
FROM YOUR PRESIDENT…
A few words from your President Danny Danforth
There is a gentle hand that comes quietly, when all the words have been spent, and all the tears shed, and only a silence remains, the long empty hours of waiting and worrying and wondering. That’s when you feel it. Not think it, or imagine it, but feel it: the unseen hand that touches your shoulder. I have experienced it more than once, betrayed by my own confidence to find just how fragile a life can be when it is lived in a real world with real pain and longing. My strength faltered. My energy drained. My hope gone absent while I was not looking. Then it touched me gently but firmly, a gesture as old as awareness, a hand resting on my shoulder, telling me that I am never alone. Before there were words there was touch, a message of love
communicated by contact alone, an ancient healing shared without a word spoken.
TAKE CARE, BE SAFE, Danny Danforth
NEEDED
Donations of new, unused greeting cards are always needed at New Beginnings Worshiping Congregation, the prison church located at the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility. Also, you may have extra 2022 calendars that you don’t need. Calendars, too, are always needed at the women’s prison. You can give your donations to Julie Prange or leave them in the “New Beginnings” box located in the fellowship room.
FROM YOUR PRESIDENT… A few words from your President Danny Danforth
Whatever comes into your life, do not be anxious. There will be someone standing beside you. You will not be alone or forgotten. A great and compassionate love will hold you up, even through the longest night. Wisdom as ancient as the stones of the earth, will whisper in your ear to help you in your choices, to comfort you in your losses, to show you the path forward. You will not be left unknowing and uncertain but filled with a deep sense of hope. Whatever comes into your life, whether sunlight or shadow, open your mind and heart to the living presence of love that surrounds you. Listen to the urgings of your own common sense and the call of what you know to be sacred. Your life will be secure, come what may, for faith will be your home and kinship your blessed band of believers.

JULY OUTREACH FOCUS: SALVATION ARMY
Remember going to Arts & Crafts events in July and finding so many things for Christmas? Christmas in July!
Last year was different to say the least. Not being in church for services, especially through the holidays, not celebrating with family or friends, and not seeing the wonderful volunteers ring the bells for the Salvation Army at stores.
This month we will support the Salvation Army for our Outreach focus. Christmas in July. A Christian based organization since 1865, their mission statement reads:
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
They are in 130 countries. Salvation Army provides services from meals to disaster relief, homeless shelters to summer camps. 23 million Americans benefit each year. If you would like more information, their website is salvationarmyusa.org.

JUNE OUTREACH FOCUS
HELPING HANDS MINISTRY
Our June Outreach Focus is our own Helping Hands Ministry. Jesus showed us so many examplesand ways to follow in his footsteps. We are Rooted in the Word. If your needs are few or many, please let Pastor Mike know how our church family can help you. If your abundance is small or large, please offer up what you can.
JUNE OUTREACH
EVANGELISM
How great it feels (Rejoice), to be able to get outside, go for a walk and visit neighbors and friends. Looking ahead toward a healthier world, we at Cross of Glory will have the opportunity to get out and about in our own neighborhoods. How we can be Reaching out on your block to invite folks to come to church with you and of course, within the Cook Park neighborhood as well.
Our dear friend Nancy Barlow and I will be meeting soon to put a plan together with tools to help us grow Cross of Glory. Speaking of Helping Hands…
BACK TO CHURCH
It seems like the last couple of weeks, there is a general sense that we are moving away from the concerns of the virus. Half of Americans have been vaccinated and the consensus is that those vaccinated will not get Covid. Public gathering places are opening again with less stringent requirements about masks and social distancing. Having said that, the virus is STILL problematic, even deadly, among nations and people where vaccinations have not been administered.
Since Easter, Cross of Glory has been open to worshippers. With each passing week, we have seen more members venture into our sanctuary. There is still a sizable number of our church friends who are choosing to stay at home on Sunday mornings, waiting for greater confirmation of the virus being a memory. Let us respect each other’s perspectives on the disease, welcoming those who return to our sanctuary with continued safeguarding AND reaching out lovingly to those in our parish who choose to be away for a time.
Would you please share with us your intent about returning to Sunday morning worship? As summer is upon us, we certainly have the option of moving outdoors for church. Would you come to church IF we were worshipping outdoors (as opposed to indoors)? If several of you still choosing at this point to worship at home say, “Yes,” then, in joy, we will indeed do the added setups necessary for worship outdoors, trusting that (1) you will come and that (2) setting up (and taking down) worship items for the outdoors will be utilized. Please share your thoughts with Mary Lemke, our Music and Worship Chairperson at lemkemj@comcast.net and/or Pastor Mike at quilargo@aol.com.
And as always, please let us know how you are doing. Pastor Mike continues to be open to meeting with you (upon your invitation) in your home, at church, wherever, you are most comfortable. We have navigated this past year well, learning along the way. As Covid comes closer to being behind us, let us continue to exercise good judgments. NO ONE in our congregation contracted the virus…a credit to you! We are in the home stretch! Let us move into these next months at church with care and with anticipation of safer and sanctuary times ahead!
FROM YOUR PRESIDENT
One thing is clear: We have a lot of work to do! Even now, as many of us already feel we are doing what we can, even now as many of us feel we are emerging from the grasp of the pandemic, even now as we are beginning to see the breadth and depth of the work before us. We have a lot of work to do! Now is not the time to rest long in the new warmth of SPRING nor forget these last months of darkness and how close a thing our passage to higher ground may be. I believe our ancestors are encouraging us to go on: to keep doing all we can to heal the world. Look for the passion and the possibility! And help where you can! How you can! When you can for, we have a lot of work to do, and we need to do it together.
TAKE CARE, BE SAFE AND WEAR YOUR MASKS.

A few words from your President Danny Danforth
I don’t know if you have a spiritual “to do” list, but since we are all works in progress, I am betting that you do, even if you have never written it down or thought of it in that way. I believe we all have a sense of where we are engaged with the Spirit. Where things are happening in our lives, where we are growing. We know where these places are for us because they are where the energy of curiosity and commitment are focusing us to change. This energy moves us forward intellectually. It lays more questions before us. It updates our “to do” list with more things to learn, more mysteries to explore, more ways to find and share happiness and peace. Spiritual growth is not about having more to do, but about doing what comes naturally.
Follow your heart where it is taking you and you will do more than you ever imagined possible.
TAKE CARE, BE SAFE AND WEAR YOUR MASKS.

STEWARDSHIP: ZOOM WORSHIP MINISTRY OPPORTUNITY
For over a year now, not being physically able to be in our sanctuary, we have been worshipping from our homes with the help of ZOOM technology. I want to thank Steve Reid for putting this together during this time of Covid. I also want to thank Vada Danforth, working from home, for her assistance as a co-host for Pastor Mike and Steve as she assists people to join our worship services. We are on our way to a new and wonderful way to worship and keep everyone connected even from afar…
Plans are being made for when we worship at Cross of Glory either in our sanctuary or outdoors when it is warm enough. Training is in place for individuals to help with the ZOOM broadcast. ZOOM worship will continue regardless of how and where we worship. We would like to thank Julie Blakely, Craig Pizinski, Don Pieratt, Angel Torres, Steve, and Trevor Wilson for their interest in learning more about the ZOOM projections/cameras now as we begin preparing for more worship opportunities at Cross of Glory. More help will be needed and appreciated. IF you are available, please let me, Steve Reid, or Pastor know.

MAY OUTREACH FOCUS: PROJECT ANGEL HEART
Looking for something different for dinner tonight? Denver Restaurant Week runs until Sunday, May 2, this year. To make it even more fun, this year you can make a charitable contribution to Project Angel Heart while enjoying a wonderful meal.
They are hoping to raise $100,000 during Denver Restaurant Week. Project Angel Heart has a single donor who will match all donations that are $30 or more.
This organization, Project Angel Heart, serves over 3,000 Coloradans with life-threatening illnesses. They make about 550,000 customized meals every year to give better nutrition to those suffering with diseases. The goal is for people to feel better and hopefully recover from their illness.
More than 200 restaurants in the Denver Metro area are participating. A list from ‘A to Z’ can be found online at Denver.org/restaurantweek. Dining options include outdoor, to-go and delivery. Enjoy a meal and help someone out at the same time. What could be better?
APRIL 2021: LETTER FROM YOUR PRESIDENT…
To All Our Cross of Glory Family and Friends,
YES, IT HAS BEEN A YEAR TO REMEMBER. I know it was hard not worshiping at the Church, but it did keep everyone safe, and we did not lose anyone to the Covid-19 virus. We also learned new computer skills that we didn’t have before. A BIG THANK YOU to the many people that taught us those new skills.
Now, that over one third of us have had our Covid-19 shots, we come closer to resuming regular activities again at Cross of Glory, including opening our building in time. We will still have Zoom for the ones who wish to stay at home to watch.
So, keep your lawn chairs in your car so on those SUNNY days, we can worship in our rose garden in our back patio.
Please take care and wear your masks.
Danny Danforth, Council President

APRIL OUTREACH FOCUS: URBAN PEAK
During the summer of 1990, I was traveling home to Arkansas from Wisconsin. I had my 10- year-old nephew and my two, very young daughters with me. We had to stop for the night near Rochester, MN. As we walked into the rural motel, the desk clerk was sending a teenage girl away. It appeared she had all her earthly belongings with her and no method of transportation.
Do you have those things we have left undone, haunt you? I continue to think of that young girl, hopefully now in her mid-40’s. What could I have done to help her then? What can I do now?
The mission of Urban Peak in Denver is “ignite the potential in youth to exit homelessness and create self-determined, fulfilled lives.” Young people seeking shelter get basic needs met, support and guidance. Urban Peak has an Outreach Team working to meet young people living on the streets of Denver. In addition to shelter, Urban Peak has an Education Program, covering the cost of GED exams and more. It also offers Employment and Training Services.
For April, our focus for Outreach will be to help youth in need. Please support Urban Peak.
Metro Caring’s: April Food Items of the Month COOKING OIL, TUNA AND/OR CANNED MEATS, CHICKEN, SPAM

FEBRUARY 2021 STEWARDSHIP
Happy Valentine’s Day!! I have received about thirty Time and Talent sheets from you so far. I think we can do better. I realize there are many ministry jobs listed and it looks a little overwhelming, but even if each of us just selected one or two small jobs, before we know it, the jobs will be filled! Please, help us to be prepared to come back to the church when we get the GREEN LIGHT. If you need a Time and Talent and/or confidential Pledge Card for 2021, please let me know. There is still time for you to return your sheets committing your talents to Cross of Glory’s ministry. I cannot wait to see all of you real soon.
JANUARY OUTREACH FOCUS: SAME CAFE
The SAME Café (So All May Eat) restaurant is dedicated to serving healthy food to everyone, regardless of one’s ability to pay. SAME Café was only the second of its kind in the U. S. when it first opened its doors in 2006. Since then, similar restaurants have been established throughout the country. The menu is diverse and changes daily. There are typically two types of soups. Salads and pizzas are offered in vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. All meals are prepared in-house, with most of the food coming from local sources.
The restaurant, located at 2023 East Colfax Avenue, serves lunch Monday through Saturday from 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM. SAME Café is open to the public. There is no set price for a meal. The SAME Café does however have a transparent budget that includes the following: The cost of food is $1.94 per meal; the average donation per patron is $4.74 per meal while the TOTAL cost of the meal (including food, staff and rent), averages $11.80. Patrons pay as they can. Some patrons provide volunteer services in lieu of cash payments.
A SAME Food Truck campaign was launched in 2019 as a means of serving nutritious food to people who are not able to get to the restaurant. The food truck program is dedicated to bringing healthy food to six Denver-area “food deserts” (places where healthy food is difficult to access due to expense and distance). A secondary goal of the food truck program is to educate people about hunger, food and justice through presence in the community. The SAME Café also has a “Cook to Work” program that prepares students for entry-level employment in a commercial kitchen. The program has no time limit for completion and is provided at no charge to the student. The SAME Café has many volunteer opportunities. Additional information is available at https://www.soallmayeat.org.
Metro Caring’sJanuary Food Items of the Month: CEREAL, GRANOLA BARS, OTHER BREAKFAST ITEMS
Cereal, Granola Bars or Other Breakfast Items. The need for food assistance in the community remains high at this time, with many people unemployed or struggling to make financial ends meet. While cereal, granola bars or other nutritious breakfast items are requested in January, any food donation is welcome and appreciated. All in-kind donations are taken to Metro Caring, one of Denver’s largest hunger relief programs. You can drop off your donations any time in “BOB”, our Big Orange Box, located near the front entrance to the church. Thank you for your generosity!

OUR OUTREACH FOCUS FOR DECEMBER IS OUR HELPING HANDS PROGRAM:
We all know that life can be challenging at times and the holiday season can be especially difficult. Helping Hands is our own special assistance program designed to help people right in our own community. The program has provided support in various ways since its inception eight years ago. Assistance has included financial help with medical expenses or utility bills, groceries, lodging, transportation and other unique needs. Because this program is our own, there are no administrative costs associated with Helping Hands. Any designated gift goes directly to those in need.
If you or someone you know is in need of Helping Hands support, please contact Pastor Mike or complete a request form (located in the narthex). All requests are confidential. Also consider supporting the Helping Hands program with your time or service. If you are able to help, please let Pastor Mike know of your availability.
METRO CARING DECEMBER FOOD FOCUS:
The Outreach Committee has designated YOUR CHOICE for those less fortunate. Please place your food donations in the boxes located in the narthex marked “Metro Caring.” A Big Orange Box, located outside, can be used for donations of any kind – anytime!
DECEMBER OUTREACH: WE ARE CROSS OF GLORY …THE LITTLE CHURCH WITH THE BIG HEART!
I wish you had been there…
…when I took 15 Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts and a large box of filler items to the processing center. I was greeted at the door by two men who were delighted to see our shoebox gifts, saying they definitely were in need of them. I told them that our church had been involved with Operation Christmas Child for many years and they were so appreciative of our ongoing support. As I got ready to leave, they asked if we could pray over the shoebox gifts. We laid hands on the shoeboxes and the prayer was beautiful, thanking God and asking Him to deliver each shoebox to the right child. They also asked God to bless all who had been involved with our shoebox gifts. Thank you, Carin Davis, for applying for a Thrivent Action Team Project that funded the shoebox gifts. Thank you to those who paid for the shipping costs of those gifts. Thank you to those who assembled the shoebox gifts or brought in filler items to complete other shoebox gifts. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY, TOUCHING CHILDREN IN FARAWAY PLACES.
…when, on cold, wet days, I gave out Blessing Bags to people on the street. One man was sitting on a medical walker at an intersection not far from our church. I walked over to him with the blessing bag in hand and he was so grateful to receive it. The next day, another man was standing on a corner with a sign facing traffic from a different direction. I pulled into the empty parking lot behind him and waited for him to see me. Meanwhile, a truck opened its window and handed the man a warm sweatshirt. What a beautiful sight to witness the generosity of a stranger! The homeless man then turned and saw me. He hurried over for the blessing bag and said, “God bless you and have a happy holiday season”. Sixty blessing bags were assembled last September as a Thrivent Action Team Project. Think of the people whose lives have been touched by those 60 gallon Ziploc bags. THANK YOU FOR GIVING GOD’S LOVE TO PEOPLE ON THE STREET.
…when I delivered 14 HarvestShare food boxes along with other food donations the week before Thanksgiving. Four people came out from MetroCaring with carts to unload my car. I wish you could have seen the smiles on their faces when they saw what we were giving. There was real joy as they pushed the overloaded carts into the building, struggling to keep all the food on the carts. Their comments included, “This is terrific” and “Thank you so much” and “Happy Thanksgiving to everyone at your church”. Our food donation that day weighed in at 447 pounds! Estimating the cost of each HarvestShare food box to be a minimum of $25-$30, I am sure our total contribution to Metro Caring that day was well over $400. Isn’t that astounding? Thank you, Vada and Danny Danforth, for the inspiration and vision of HarvestShare. Thank you to those who created HarvestShare food boxes or donated canned goods. THANK YOU TO ALL FOR SHARING WITH THOSE WHO HUNGER.
Julie Prange, Outreach and Evangelism Chairperson
METRO CARING’S NOVEMBER FOOD ITEM: CANNED FRUITS OR VEGETABLES
Food donations of any kind are always appreciated. Please place your donations in the “Metro Caring” boxes in the narthex or in BOB, our “Big Orange Box”. Know that your generosity helps others less fortunate. Don’t forget to use your Cross of Glory grocery tote bags to bring food donations to church. More bags are available from ushers should you need them or want to give them to others.
NOVEMBER OUTREACH: Second Wind Fund
Founded in 2002, the Second Wind Fund has served over 5,800 children and youth at risk for suicide. Suicide is the leading cause of death for individuals between ages 10 and 24. While other suicide prevention organizations offer broad suicide prevention education and awareness, the Second Wind Fund takes a different approach to this serious mental health issue. They have an innovative program that matches children and youth, ages 19 and younger, with a licensed therapist in their community. Up to 12 counseling sessions are made available to youth at risk for suicide. Referrals to the program typically are generated by school mental health staff, but home-schooled youth or those no longer in school are also eligible for counseling services. Second Wind Fund’s program helps referred youth discover hope and healing in their lives.

They will be delivered to Metro Caring that same week in order to be available to families prior to Thanksgiving. A special information sheet that provides details on this new program is available from our ushers. A sample box is also on display at the church.
STEWARDSHIP
Hello Everyone, Please be on the lookout for the 2020 Time and Talent Sheets and Financial Pledge Cards being placed in your mailbox in the narthex.
Please return your T&T Sheet to Vada Danforth, Stewardship Committee member, and your sealed Financial Pledge Card to Pam Lugo, our Financial Secretary. It would be most helpful if those are returned no later than November 17. Thank you! In addition, I want to urge those who do grocery shopping at King Soopers to consider establishing a King Soopers Loyalty Card in the name of Cross of Glory Lutheran Church. The King Soopers Community Rewards Program provides for a certain percentage of purchases to be credited back to our charitable account. There is information available on establishing these accounts and/or changing your existing card to designate Cross of Glory. Please contact Colette Kerlin or me if
you have any questions. Thank you!

THANKSGIVING…
• Thanksgiving isn’t just a day, it’s a way we can live our lives every day.
• The more you are thankful, the more you attract things to be thankful for.
• God gave you a gift of 86,600 seconds today, have you used one of them to say thank you?
• The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart.
• All things we receive from God work together for good. We praise and thank Him in trials and triumphs, scarcity and plenty knowing He sends exactly what we need.
Rejoice always; pray without ceasing: in everything give thanks…1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

STEWARDSHIP
Hello fellow members, I wanted to let you know that we’ll be sending out the 2019-2020 Time and Talent Sheet surveys and Financial Pledge Cards very soon. We ask that you prayerfully review and note the areas you are able and willing to provide help. If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to let me know. We so appreciate everyone’s willingness to offer your time and talents in pursuit of a loving, supportive and faithful congregation.
The needs of our congregation are many. The very first line of the Bible, in the book of Genesis, is “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” It’s the beginning and the end of our Stewardship principles. God not only created everything, he owns everything. Our life is not our own. Our lives are on loan from God. He has provided our lives to steward for His glory and for our good.
As I think I’ve conveyed over my term as Stewardship Chairperson, some activities we do to practice stewardship may seem small and insignificant in the overall big picture. But they are no less important than anything else. We’ve seen example after example of congregants reaching out in love to support the overall management and care of our Church. We are forever grateful for any and all expenditures of service, service in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
We look forward to receiving everyone’s Time and Talent Sheet surveys and Financial Pledge Cards back in a timely manner once you have received and have taken the proper amount of time to reflect and commit. We appreciate all contributions for the health of our Little Church with a Great Big Heart. God’s continued blessings to everyone!
Yours truly,
Helen Devantery, Stewardship Chairman
INTRODUCING HARVESTSHARE, A NEW AUTUMN OUTREACH PROGRAM
Fall is a time of harvest, a time to gather in what was sown earlier. Cross of Glory is harvesting this year, introducing a new HarvestShare food program to help others. A special flier detailing HarvestShare has been placed in member mailboxes and is also available from ushers on Sunday mornings. Our goal is to deliver full food boxes to Metro Caring the week before Thanksgiving. Vada and Danny Danforth have assembled an example of a HarvestShare food box which is on display in the fellowship room. Check it out! This fall, let’s share our bounty with others – HarvestShare.

METRO CARING’S FOOD ITEM FOR OCTOBER: PEANUT BUTTER
Please share as you can to help those in need. Please place your donations of peanut butter or other non-perishable items in the boxes in the narthex marked “Metro Caring”, or in our BIG ORANGE BOX. Thank you for caring and sharing.
OCTOBER OUTREACH: THE HOLY HAMMERS COALITION, A FAITH PARTNER OF HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF METRO DENVER
Cross of Glory has been a participating congregation in the Holy Hammers coalition for approximately 19 years. Holy Hammers has financially sponsored and built many Habitat for Humanity homes throughout the Denver metropolitan area since 1997. The coalition also tithes financial support for Habitat homes around the world.
Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Since 1979, more than 600 houses have been built in the community. In addition to new home construction, critical home repairs are also completed in the Denver area. Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and give hope to those desperately in need of affordable housing.
Construction on a new Habitat home sponsored by Holy Hammers will begin next month. There are also other ways to support Habitat for Humanity. You can shop at one of the five Denver area Habitat ReStores where you will find home furnishings and home improvement items at less-than-retail prices. You can donate new or gently used household items as well. The Habitat office has various volunteer needs, including help at their ReStores. For more information, please contact Julie Prange.
STEWARDSHIP
Julie Prange, our esteemed Outreach Committee Chairperson, shared the following with me and I wanted to share it with all of you:
Take Time to THINK… It is the source of power. Take Time to PRAY…. It is the greatest power on Earth. Take time to LAUGH… It is the music of the soul. Take time to DO CHARITY… It is the key to Heaven. Take time to PLAY… It is the secret of perpetual youth. Take time to LOVE and BE LOVED… It is a God-given privilege. Take time to GIVE… It is too short a day to be selfish. Take time to READ… It is the fountain of wisdom. Take time to BE FRIENDLY… It is the road to happiness. Take time to WORK… It is the price of success.
I’m sure we could come up with a few others. What might be one that you would consider? Thank you all, may God’s blessings continue to shower upon you!

RALLY SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 “COME TO THE TABLE”
Please join us for Rally Sunday on September 8. Our service will be held outside under the “Big White Tent”. We have many activities planned. We have a special communion planned. We will have a celebration picnic after worship. Invite your kids, friends, grandparents – everyone!
Part of our day will be committed to the annual “God’s Work, Our Hands” program. We will put blessing bags together while our hot dogs are being grilled.
There is other “fun” stuff being planned….But I want that to be a surprise…
JOIN THE FUN!!!!
Lynn Reid, Education Chairperson
RALLY SUNDAY FIRST COMMUNION CELEBRATION
We all love Kelli Dankenbring’s son, Carson. Believe it or not, the time has come for Carson to receive his first communion! I (Pastor Mike) have enjoyed spending preparation sessions with Carson and his family at the Dankenbring home. Join us Sunday, September 8, when Carson, on Rally Sunday, will receive his first communion.
We know our congregation wants to celebrate with Carson. As you continue to mentor him in faith, be with him especially on Rally Sunday as we congratulate him on yet another step in his faith journey.
Congratulations, Carson! We love you! We celebrate with you on your wonderful day!
RALLY SUNDAY SPECIAL SERVICE PROJECT
Join us on September 8 for a special Rally Sunday Service Project. Congregations across the country participate in service projects in September as part of the ELCA’s “God’s Work, Our Hands” community service effort. Cross of Glory will be participating too, along with help from our friends from Prince of Peace! We will assemble blessing bags with various items that can be given to the people we often see holding signs for money at major intersections. Plan now to stay after church that day to be part of the blessing bag assembly team, and to take some of the blessing bags with you afterwards. A picnic lunch will add to the day’s fun. Funds for this blessing bags project are generously provided by Thrivent Financial as an Action Team Project. For more information about Thrivent Financial, please talk to me, Julie Prange, Carin Davis or Jan Reich.

SEPTEMBER OUTREACH FOCUS CROSS OF GLORY’S HELPING HANDS PROGRAM
We know there are people that occasionally need help to get them through the rough patches of life. Cross of Glory’s Helping Hands program meets the needs of those closest to home – people right here in our own community. Past helping hands disbursements have provided food, lodging, transportation and other supports to meet urgent and unique needs. Unlike most non-profit organizations that provide assistance or service to others, there are no administrative expenses associated with our program. Therefore, any money designated to Helping Hands goes directly to those who truly need a helping hand.
In addition to monetary support, we also are in need of people to provide Helping Hands support in other ways. Can you drive someone to a medical appointment or buy groceries for someone who is housebound? Can you walk a dog for someone who can’t? If you are able to offer your time or services, please make Pastor Mike aware of your availability. The need is real, and so is our support. Please consider being an active participant in our Helping Hands program.
Also, if you or someone you know has a special need, please complete a Helping Hands card available in the narthex or contact Pastor Mike to make a request. All assistance from the Helping Hands program is kept confidential. Don’t hesitate to be a part of Cross of Glory’s Helping Hands program – either as a provider or as a recipient. Helping Hands has become a significant part of our congregation’s outreach ministry since its inception in 2011. Thank you for your loving concern for others.
Metro Caring’s September Food Item of the Month DRIED BEANS OR PASTA
These food staples help stretch meals for those who have limited food budgets or resources. Metro Caring has been serving the Denver community since 1974. In its last fiscal year, Metro Caring provided food to over 23,000 individuals. You can drop off your donation in the “Metro Caring” box in the narthex. Thank you for giving generously to help others less fortunate.
CROSS OF GLORY/METRO CARING BIG ORANGE BOX
As announced last month, we are expanding our efforts to provide food donations to Metro Caring. We now have a “Big Orange Box” outside our building for friends and neighbors to drop off food donations day or night. Jim Van Someren, development manager for Metro Caring, will be attending our worship service on September 8 when we bless our “Big Orange Box.” We know the donations placed in that container will bless those in need. We look forward to hearing Jim share information about Metro Caring’s food bank and social services. Thank you, Cross of Glory, for being a faithful supporter of Metro Caring for DECADES!

Metro Caring is the largest food pantry in Denver. In 2018, they served over 68,000 people. There continues to be great need in our community. In addition to food, Metro Caring takes a holistic approach to fighting hunger by providing other assistance as well. Our food item for July is shelf-stable milk/milk substitutes. Please help those in need by giving generously. Please place your donations may be placed in the Metro Caring box in the narthex.
HOLY HAMMERS/HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOME REPAIR OPPORTUNITY: SATURDAY, JULY 27
The Holy Hammers coalition for Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver has scheduled several summer home repair dates. Five volunteers are needed to make repairs to an existing home located at 4725 St. Paul Street in north Denver on July 27. The sign-up website is: http://vhub.at/holyhammers. Please contact Julie Prange for additional information. The Holy Hammers coalition is also sponsoring a new Habitat home and there will be more construction opportunities available this fall.
JULY OUTREACH FOCUS: THE HanHee KIM WORLD MISSION CENTER
This Mission Center was founded in 1993 by our Christian neighbors, the Korean Baptist Church, in memory of Pastor Lee’s wife. Mrs. HanHee Kim’s vision was to help the poor and neglected children of the world. The “Children of Jesus” (COJ) ministry of the mission center has endeavored to introduce 150,000 needy children to Jesus. The COJ ministry has annual mission trips to Peru, touching the lives of many youth and teaching them of God’s love for all children. Cross of Glory has been a part of that vision, sponsoring Nayda Sutta Guispe in Peru for a number of years. Nayda recently completed high school and therefore no longer qualifies for the COJ program. However, she continues to attend church.
We are now sponsoring a 12-year-old boy, Jefferson Javier Fasa Vi Chota. He lives with his parents and a younger brother in Iquitos, Peru. Jefferson’s father is a fisherman and his mother is a homemaker. Jefferson likes to study and would like to be a policeman when he grows up. He attends church regularly and his prayer request is for him and his family, and especially for his mother to get closer to God. They live in extreme poverty. Our financial support provides Jefferson with food, school uniforms, school supplies and basic medical support. Please support Jefferson and his family with your prayers and designated financial gift to the HanHee Kim World Mission Center. For additional information, talk to Pastor Mike or Julie Prange.

“I choose to look at the personal gain of a beautiful day, but also so much personal interaction with other members and people from the community.” – Colette Kerlin
Well said, Colette! Colette is describing her time a couple of weeks ago as she worked as the cashier for the annual Yard Sale. Colette, thank you so much for sharing your time, your caring, and your enthusiasm for the day…I agree wholeheartedly, and I believe many others do as well, with exactly what you wrote. The day, the event, everything, was about more than just the proceeds — just like the Yard Sale is about so much more than just a simple neighborhood project!
We earned approximately $1,000 during the day for our Outreach programs! So many members made their way to the big event – and on behalf of everyone at Cross of Glory, please accept our deepest gratitude for your willingness to be a part of it. Thanks to everyone who supplied donations! And we are grateful too for all of our shoppers, with Esther Vreeland, accompanied by her daughter-in-law, being among them!
Thank you to Kelli, Scott and Jacobie Dankenbring for your help with the water bottles. Sandra Keefer and sweet Kenley, so much help throughout the week, were there with donations, pricing, and all around great company! Pam Lugo, John and Cherry Test (and Poppy), Caroline Wheeler and her husband Rob, Jean Binks, Mary Lemke, Doreen Eubanks, Bonnie and George Frank, Vada Danforth, Julie Blakely, Shelly Blakely, Katrina Creason, Dee Mayer, Char Brauckmuller (how extended is this family?), Jamie Winter, Angel Torres, Pastor Mike, and my husband, Jim, thank you so much for your participation!
And that’s not everyone!
There’s Trevor Wilson, The Grilled Cheese Man. Delicious sandwiches. Very Generous man too. Thank you, Trevor! You brought so much enjoyment to that corner of Oneida and Panorama!
Then there were the youth of the Korean Church, who showed up in droves in the early morning hours of the day, along with their church caretaker, Billy, who put up a tent for all of us. Helping out along the way, with a smile, love in heart, and an eagerness for life.
And last, but certainly not least, there are our neighborhood friends, Nancy Barlow and her husband, KC Keefer, who show up, jump in, and are always there to do whatever they can to help.
We know the Yard Sale can be pretty labor intensive, and we understand it’s not easy for everyone to be able to participate. But we know all of you are with us in spirit!
It was a beautiful day! Thank you, God, for giving us everything we need…and may we always embrace God’s continued blessings…

JUNE 2019 OUTREACH: HELPING HANDS MINISTRY
Since the program’s inception in 2011, Helping Hands has literally provided thousands of dollars in assistance to those in our midst who are in need. Funds are used to help people based on their unique circumstances. Past expenditures have included the purchase of baby food and diapers, hotel rooms, RTD bus passes, work boots and gloves, school supplies, eyeglasses and groceries. Helping Hands has also offset the costs of medical care, moving expenses, utility bills, funeral expenses, mortgage payments and auto repairs. Babysitters and laborers have occasionally been hired to support people in need.
The beauty of this program is that the funds have a full and direct impact on people’s lives. There is no middle man, no administrative fees or other costs associated with the Helping Hands program. Whatever is donated to Helping Hands goes to those needing help. Please support Helping Hands with a designated gift or let Pastor Mike know if you are able to offer your time or personal services to help others. If you or someone you know has need of the Helping Hands program, confidential requests can be made to Pastor Mike either personally or via request cards in the narthex.
Thank you to all who have supported Helping Hands in the past. The program has become a significant part of our congregation’s ministry. We know the need for an occasional helping hand is a reality for many and your support is appreciated.

“A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.” Father James Keller
Hi everyone! I came across the above quote while searching the internet for Stewardship ideas. It comes from a website called Tithe.ly. This particular website hosts a variety of ideas for strengthening our stewardship values in the church, which are mostly rooted in generosity, gratitude and giving of ourselves for a higher good. If you get a chance, please take a look at Tithe.ly, I believe you’ll find it interesting and inspirational.
One of the most vital activities we get involved in is the Annual Summer Cook Park Yard Sale. It is scheduled for Saturday, June 15. It can be a lot of planning and a lot of work, but it comes with a lot of reward for Cross of Glory. We will be looking for people who can volunteer in different ways: donations, pricing items the week before, putting up the yard tent, moving tables and items outside, cashiers, customer service, grill chef, tear down, etc.
We hope you might enjoy helping out on a nice summer day. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, etc. We will be posting a sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall. Your attention to this very important project is greatly appreciated!
Light a candle today! Thank you so much for all that you do for the care of Cross of Glory Lutheran Church! I look forward to seeing all of you soon!
God’s blessings,

Metro Caring’s May Food Item of the Month: CANOLA OR OLIVE OIL
For 45 years, Metro Caring has provided a food pantry in the Denver community. It also sponsors comprehensive, wrap-around programming to help families break the cycle of poverty. Its’ Fresh-Foods Market offers shoppers dignity while saving them, on average, $250 per month in grocery costs. Classes on diabetes prevention and self-management, cooking and nutrition are among the services it offers. Our food item focus for the month of May is canola or olive oil. Please place your donations in the specially marked boxes in the narthex. Thank you for sharing with those less fortunate.
MAY OUTREACH FOCUS: URBAN PEAK
Founded in 1988 by caring citizens in the Capitol Hill area, Urban Peak has been Colorado’s premier organization working with youth living on the streets. They provide five basic services for youth ages 15 through 24 who are on the streets or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. The services are at little or no cost to the youth and include an overnight shelter, a daytime drop-in center, street outreach, education and employment programming and supportive housing.
Originally established as a daytime drop-in center, Urban Peak soon opened a temporary overnight shelter in the basement of a church to address the needs of this special population. In 1998, Urban Peak opened Colorado’s first and only licensed shelter for homeless youth. Since then, Urban Peak has expanded the shelter, acquired three apartment complexes for transitional housing and established a Colorado Springs location. They also operate the Spot Youth Center, a Denver daytime drop-in center that provides education and employment services. In its last fiscal year, Urban Peak served 2,550 youth.
In addition to financial support, the following in-kind items are currently needed by Urban Peak:
Deodorant
Sunscreen
Men’s Boxer Briefs (medium or large)
Sunglasses
Baseball Caps
Flip Flops
Reusable Water Bottles (preferably new)
Body Wash (standard or large bottles)
Shampoo/Conditioner (standard or large bottles)
$5-$10 Gift Cards (King Soopers, Safeway, Target, Walmart, McDonalds, Starbucks, AMC or Regal Movie Theatres)
Your in-kind contributions can be placed in the “Urban Peak” box in the fellowship room.
Thank you for supporting Urban Peak!

COMMUNITY SHRED: SATURDAY, JUNE 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
It’s that time of year when Cross of Glory is providing you a way to dispose of the “piles” of information that you have been accumulating! The truck will be at Cross of Glory on Saturday, June 1 for three hours, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM. If your “piles” consist of cancelled checks, medical records, receipts with account numbers being displayed and any other general personal pieces, they qualify as being acceptable! Feel free to dispose of newspapers, trash, and/or pop cans elsewhere!
A suggested donation of $5 per box or trash bag is being requested. However, a larger donation would be appreciated too. Cross of Glory can be of help to you – and at the same time, Cross of Glory can benefit too!!
You still have nearly two months to build more “piles!” Tell your friends and neighbors about your discovery of our Community Shred on Saturday, June 1!
APRIL OUTREACH FOCUS
In April, we will be supporting our two Colorado Lutheran camps – Sky Ranch and Rainbow Trail. Both camps provide outdoor ministry in the Rocky Mountains with a full array of services, including camping, retreats and special programs. They are gearing up for June through August, their busiest time of the year when they welcome youth for summer church camp. They hold special programs for confirmation groups, sponsor men’s and women’s retreats and have special family advent events. Family camping is also available at both camps.
Sky Ranch is located 55 miles west of Fort Collins. Rainbow Trail is southwest of Canon City. Both camps are actively working to improve their facilities. Sky Ranch is currently building a new retreat center which will be completed in September. Rainbow Trail has been leasing the land the camp is located on from the National Forest Service. In recent years, they have been engaged in a land exchange program with the Forest Service to own their camp site.
While both camps focus on youth, they provide positive nurturing experiences for all participants. They help people of all ages connect with God in a beautiful mountain setting. Who doesn’t enjoy singing camp songs around a campfire? OUR GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD!
METRO CARING
Metro Caring’s April Food Item of the Month PEANUT BUTTER. Metro CareRing operates one of the largest hunger relief programs in Denver. It distributes food and personal care items to the needy, serving up to 500 people every day. Please share as you can to help those in need. Please place your donations in the boxes marked “Metro Caring.” Thank you for caring and sharing.
Hope of Eternal Life
Where are your accusers now, Oh Lord of all goodness? Where are the jeering crowds? Where is the ugly tree, the whip and sword, the nails and the cold, dark tomb?
We see the stone rolled aside, an angel proclaiming astonishing things. We see you now gloriously risen, resurrected and living among us. We see that you have broken all the chains that bind us to the world.
You have saved your people from abandonment. You have turned the finality of death into the hope of eternal life.
Accept our songs of joy on this resurrection morning. Hear our prayers of praise and receive our gifts of thanksgiving. Forgive our foolishness and our contrary ways and our sinful natures.
Come before all the world and show your almighty power, your endless compassion, your tender mercy and your undying love.
In your name we pray. Amen.

MARCH OUTREACH FOCUS: LUTHERAN FAMILY SERVICES ROCKY MOUNTAINS
Lutheran Family Services’ mission is to strengthen, heal and provide hope for individuals and families in the Rocky Mountain region. Established in 1948, LFS is a faith-based, non-profit organization providing adoption, foster care, older adult attentions and refugee services. They believe that all people, from the newborn to the most aged, are valued people. LFS attempts to recognize areas of need and find ways to serve those in our society who may otherwise be marginalized. They are a full-service adoption agency, working closely with clients to achieve cohesive families. This includes designated adoption (connection with a birth family prior to adoption) and international adoption services.
When a federally declared disaster occurs, LFS is involved in organizing and implementing broad-based disaster response efforts to address urgent needs of the people. They have supported Hurricane Katrina evacuees, various Colorado wildfire victims as well as helping with other situational needs. Services include physical supplies, emotional and spiritual care, funding to support disaster response case management and congregational hardship grants.
LFS works with families through their foster care program, placing children in foster care who have been abused or neglected. Each child’s individual needs are addressed when he/she is placed in a foster home that provides stable structure and love. Unaccompanied refugee minor foster care is also available.
Since 1975, refugee resettlement services have been coordinated by LFS. This includes housing, employment, English language and cultural orientation. Cross of Glory was active in this program, sponsoring several refugees from Vietnam, Ethiopia and Armenia.
Older adult attentions and caregiver supports are additional programs provided by Lutheran Family Services. With offices in five Colorado cities and Albuquerque, New Mexico, LFS has served thousands of people in the Rocky Mountain area. They are always in need of volunteers. Contact Katie Scherr at 720-541-6826 or katie.scherr@lfsrm.org for more information.

STEWARDSHIP
Greetings once again from the desert of Arizona! I hope this month’s newsletter submission finds everyone doing well and feeling blessed in the presence of Jesus Christ.
I recently observed the installation of the new church council members for the church I’ve been attending since down here in Surprise, Arizona, Spirit of Grace Lutheran Church. They used 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 as a starting point for the installation.
1 Corinthians 12:4-7 English Standard Version (ESV)
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
In looking further into the passage, I read from my book The Complete Guide to the Bible, by Stephen M. Miller, which explains this particular passage as the following:
“Folks at the church of Corinth seem to rank their spiritual gifts. Perhaps it’s a bit like the perception some churchgoers have today that a preacher or a soloist has the more important spiritual gift, beating out the lowly nursery worker. Tell it to the kid with the messy diaper. That’s the point Paul makes. ‘The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.’ (1 Corinthians 12:12). In other words, we’re all essential to keeping the body up and running. Well then, why are the next words out of Paul’s mouth a ranking of spiritual gifts – with his title on top? ‘First are apostles, second are prophets, third are teachers, then those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, those who speak in unknown languages’ (1 Corinthians 12:28). Some Bible experts say Paul’s list is a reaction to the Corinthian notion that speaking in unknown languages is the top gift; Paul lists that gift last. And some say the list is more about chronology. Christianity began with the apostles, and their work produced prophets, teachers, and other gifted leaders. This much is clear. Paul says if we don’t have love, it doesn’t matter what gift we have. ‘If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing’ (1 Corinthians 13:2). Spiritual gifts are only temporary, Paul adds. They’re intended to help draw people to Christ. But character traits, three in particular, ‘will last forever – faith, hope, and love – and the greatest of these is love’ (1 Corinthians 13:13).”
I hope the above gives all of us something to ponder. Wishing you all sunny days, warming up nicely as spring approaches, and remembering that FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE are what make giving to others more incredibly important and rewarding. Please know how much everyone’s attention to the body of our congregation, Cross of Glory, is appreciated and so very much needed.
God’s continued blessings to all! Thank you!

METRO CARING’S FEBRUARY FOOD ITEM OF THE MONTH: CANNED SOUP, ESPECIALLY LOW-SODIUM
Metro Caring is the largest food pantry in Denver. In fiscal year 2018, Metro Caring provided food to nearly 23,000 individuals at least once during the year, with some individuals coming back multiple times for assistance. The average amount of food received by each household per visit was 83 pounds, estimated to be a week’s worth of groceries. In addition to food, Metro Caring takes a holistic approach to fighting hunger by providing other assistance as well. They provide cooking and nutrition classes, utility and tax assistance, and employment-readiness training.
Since February is Super Bowl month, it’s quite appropriate that we should focus on soup donations for the food bank. Please place your donations in the specially marked boxes in the narthex. Thank you for sharing with those less fortunate.
FEBRUARY OUTREACH FOCUS
CROSS OF GLORY’S HELPING HANDS PROGRAM
Since 2011, we have developed a warm, caring ministry to help people right in our own community. The needs are real and the help is a true blessing. There are no administrative costs associated with Helping Hands, so every dollar you designate to the Helping Hands Program goes directly to those who need assistance. The needs have been varied, from the purchase of baby diapers, school supplies, groceries or RTD bus passes to offsetting medical expenses, utility bills or car repairs. We know the circumstances are real and your support is greatly appreciated.
Please support Helping Hands with a designated gift or let Pastor Mike know if you are able to offer your time or personal services to help others. Also, if you or someone you know needs assistance from our Helping Hands program, confidential requests can be made to Pastor Mike either personally or via request cards in the narthex. Thank you to all who have supported Helping Hands in the past.

THE MAN IN BLACK
“The Man in Black,” the moniker of legendary country singer Johnny Cash, was an imposing figure on stage; one that commanded admiration and respect from fans and peers alike. His deep gritty voice sang of a life marked by sorrow, moral tribulation, and redemption. Cash’s music bridged the musical genres of rock, gospel, and country music, and established him not only as an icon of American culture, but as a musical superstar leaving an incomparable legacy on the musical landscape.
Yet behind the stage lights and the acclaim, there was a broken man whose life was marked both by great faith and humbling addiction, by extreme highs and the depths of despair. His well-documented struggles with drug abuse, alcoholism, and dysfunctional relationships struck a resonant chord with those who had faced similar hardships. His son, John Carter, said: “I believe the thing about Dad that people find so easy to relate to is that he was willing to expose his most cumbersome burdens, his most consuming darknesses. He wasn’t afraid to go through the fire and say: ‘I fell down. I’ve made mistakes. I’m weak. I hurt.’ But in doing so, he gained some sort of defining strength. Every moment of darkness enabled him to better see the light.”
In October of 1967, Cash was at what he considered the darkest point in his life. His personal and professional lives had spun out of control, and he had become isolated from everyone around him. He had built his life on the fleeting nature of fame and fortune. Feeling like he could no longer go on, he decided to end his life. “I never wanted to see another dawn,” Cash recounted later, “I had wasted my life. I had drifted so far away from God and every stabilizing force in my life that I felt there was no hope for me.”
Driving his Jeep to Nickajack Cave, a remote subterranean cave near the Tennessee River, he entered the mouth of cave, hoping to descend deep enough within the labyrinth of passageways, to never be found alive. After hours of crawling inside the tunnels, he lay down in the consuming blackness to die. “The absolute lack of light was appropriate, for at that moment I was as far from God as I had ever been,” Cash remembered. Yet as he lay in that dark abyss, he began to focus on God and suddenly he felt overcome by a sensation of complete peace. With a renewed sense of hope, he began to slowly inch his way along the cave floor blindly crawling towards what he hoped was the outside. A slight breeze led him to a stream of light, which eventually led him to the outside world.
After emerging from the cave, Cash earnestly committed himself to God and promised to “do whatever it took to get off drugs.” He kept that promise, and in time recovered both his strength and sanity. “I rebuilt my connection to God,” he said. From that time forward, Cash knew both personal and professional success, but more importantly there had been a real and profound spiritual awakening from his cave experience. God had divinely intervened in his life. For Cash, the ascendance from the underground cave represented a spiritual rebirth and a self-revelation that resulted in a renewed connection with God. He had entered Nickajack Cave with the oppressive blackness of sin consuming him and had emerged a redeemed man of God. He summed it up this way in his autobiography, Cash: The Autobiography, “The greatest joy of my life was that I no longer felt separated from Him. Now He is my Counselor, my Rock of Ages to stand upon.”
Yours truly, Helen Devantery, Stewardship Chairman

NEW TUESDAY EDUCATION CLASS
The early Church was predictable in a number of different respects.Against the backdrop of persecution, nonetheless it flourished in large part due to its resolve to learn more about Jesus andfaith by studying the Scriptures. At Cross of Glory we too are resolved to learn more about God, faith and Christianity in perusing and discussing God’s precious Word. The Early Church came together in worship to sing hymns, pray and celebrate communion. We, as the Church of 2019, the church on the corner of Oneida and Evans, come together to do the same and to learn more about the Bible.
The Bible informs us that we are to care for one another. Join us on Tuesday mornings at 10:00 AM for a new class on Christian Care-Giving. Pastor Mike will lead the class. He will help those attending see the many Scripture passages that inform our reaching out to others with giving, loving hearts. There are many shut-in members of Cross of Glory. Always with us in spirit on Sunday mornings, they are not able physically to be with us in worship on Sundays. Hopefully, the new Tuesday class will better equip us to support our shut-in members, our hospitalized ones, our lonely or significantly challenged ones as we take our Christian Care-Giving…on the road.
The 10:00AM class starts Tuesday, February 12 at Cross of Glory and will run until Tuesday, March 19.Join us!Be willing to help those that especially need our added help. The class will inform us to do so. Be part. Pass the word! Make a difference!
INTRODUCING OUR NEWEST COG MEMBER:
Caroline Wheeler
On Sunday, January 6, Cross of Glory welcomed two young ladies, Trish Bojarzin and Caroline Wheeler, as “official” Cross of Glory members. Marcia Hallenbeck visited with Caroline and wrote the following introduction article. Trish’s introduction piece will be in the next newsletter.
Caroline Wheeler was born in Vanerborg, Sweden close to the west coast of Sweden. She grew up in the small town of Ulricehamm, Sweden. She went to the University in Gothenburg and Uppsala. She worked as a dietician at University Hospital in Linkoping. Her family, in Sweden, includes her parents, Auntie and Uncle, her brother, his girlfriend, a niece and nephew. She still has many close friends in Sweden.
Caroline met her husband Rob in Albuquerque, New Mexico while she was on vacation in the United States. They were married in Sweden in October 2015. Caroline and Rob decided to live in the United States mainly because it was easier for her to move here than it would be for him to move to Sweden and learn a new language.
Caroline and Rob have two Chihuahuas. In their spare time they enjoy traveling, working out and watching movies. Caroline enjoys puzzling, photography, hiking, being outdoors and, as we all know, she loves to sing. She sings in a Swedish choir in Denver through Swedish Women Educational Association. She works in Denver as a personal trainer.
While looking for a Lutheran church close to home, Caroline came to Cross of Glory. She liked it right away, which has been lucky for all of us! Welcome, Caroline!
Next month, we will look forward to becoming acquainted with Trish Bojarzin!
